Foot Bunions and Braces

Bunion Brace

A bunion is a painful deformity of the joint between the big toe and the foot.  It causes an enlargement of bone or tissue around the area which might become red, raw and appear puffy or swollen.  In order to avoid costly surgery or lost time from work or school a bunion brace can be used to correct the problem.

Bunions can be caused by a structural issue with the foot, shoes or foot gear that is ill-fitting, stress on the joint or a combination of all factors. A bunion brace works by both correcting and protecting the bunion.

The best kind of bunion brace will be made of a thin, breathable material that can be worn easily inside a pair of roomy shoes. The fabric should be adjusted to the big toe so it can provide support and gently correct the bend inward to the second toe. The best bunion brace will also be made of a washable material.

The pluses of wearing a bunion brace are it can be worn barefoot, with socks, slippers, or wide-fitting shoes.  A well fitting bunion brace remains comfortable during everyday activities and is loose enough not to constrict blood flow.

The benefits of wearing a bunion brace also include being able to correct a bunion while still remaining active.  It can prevent the need for expensive and time consuming surgery.  It stays comfortable while it relieves the pain and realigning the big toe.

Begin by wearing the bunion brace for no more than twenty minutes.  If it is an adjustable type try walking about for a few minutes before slipping the brace on since blood flow while walking will cause the toes to swell slightly more than their state while in sleep.

Adjust the bunion brace and go about your routine normally for twenty minutes.  After a few days try to work up to several hours of use at a time, but be careful to adjust the bunion brace if it becomes too tight or too loose during the day since this will slow down the adjustment.  After using the bunion brace for awhile the bunion should stabilize and adjustments will become less frequent.
